Papierfabrik Palm, Germany’s largest family owned business in the paper industry, announced that the assembly of the world’s fastest and widest corrugated base paper machine is now in its final phase at the construction site of the Palm paper mill in Neukochen (Germany). The main supplier for the paper machine is the Finnish company Valmet. The applicator roll installed in the new film press is 11.6m in length, 1.8m in diameter, weighs 73.1 tonnes and is the world’s largest roll of its kind. The new coating process developed by Valmet was especially designed for packaging papers with a high proportion of recovered paper. Recycled fibres lose some of their strength with each recycling cycle, which places higher demands on the papermaking process. Compared to conventional starch application systems, the technology on the new paper machine in Aalen presses the starch deeper into the paper, giving the finished paper a stronger fibre bond.

Voith, founded in 1867, a global technology company and one of the larger family-owned companies in Europe, announced that Modern Karton recently signed a contract with Voith for the extension and modernization of its existing OCC line. Within the scope of the contract, Voith will also supply a new stock preparation line for pulp and recovered paper. The new order follows the successful upgrade and expansion of the existing DIP line.

The objective of the modernization project is to increase production by 30 percent and to allow the processing of recovered paper with a maximum contaminant content of 12 percent. This means that the increasingly poorer quality recovered paper used by the mill can be readily processed while at the same time improving the cleanliness of the finished stock.

This new stock preparation line provides the greatest possible flexibility for manufacturing the top ply of the white top testliner. As an alternative to pulp, high-quality recovered paper can also be processed. Established in 1978, Modern Karton is today the largest manufacturer of packaging paper in Turkey and one of the biggest in Europe. It has an annual production capacity of 1,050,000 tonnes.
